Senior Thesis Project: Solo

Brief

In my spring semester of 2020 at LMU, I worked on a senior thesis revolving around a social justice topic of my choice. I decided to work with the aspects of "singlism" as it was a topic that I could relate to and affected me personally.

What is Singlism?

According to Dr. Bella DePaulo, singlism is “the stigmatizing of adults who are single. It includes negative stereotyping of singles and discrimination against singles.”

Abstract

The population of singles are growing each year with the most recent data stating that 51% of Americans between the ages 18-34 are single. Despite the high population of singles, discrimination towards this group of people still exist. Singles deserve a happily ever after too. Many find themselves pressured into getting married while facing discrimination such as paying higher taxes along with negative associations for their lifestyles. Although society sees marriage as a crucial part to happiness, singles should not feel obligated to get married.
