Senior Thesis Project: Solo (Process)

Below is a an outline of how I managed to get to my final idea as well a mock up of my would be gallery piece in the TPK art gallery.

Logo Design

Initial Logo

This was my initial logo design for my project. Originally I wanted to illustrate that being single isn't something people should worry or be upset about. I thought of naming the project "Happily Alone" to convey this. I tried adding multiple elements to the logo to emphasize the concept but later realized that this was actually causing the logo to become a distraction. The logo and name was later changed to "solo."

Edited Logo to Final Logo

On the left is the draft for the finished logo (on the right). I ended up using the term solo as it seemed like a better word choice compared to "alone." I drafted the logo on paper and transferred the idea onto the computer. I tried to recreate it digitally but was unable to make it as I envisioned it to be. I later settled to using an existing font (Avenir Next) for my logo. I constructed the letters to form a happy face as I still wanted to show that being independent is something people shouldn't feel ashamed of.

Poster Design

Initial Poster Designs

These two designs were my initial poster ideas. Originally I wanted to illustrate how unfairly singles were treated. In a satirical sense I put an upset figure in both posters to emphasize the feeling of neglect and rejection that singles faced in society. After changing the logo, I realized that the concept didn't fit with the logo as the logo was cheerful.

Second Poster Design

With the logo change, I decided to remove the depressing illustrations. This edited version of my poster was purely type as I wanted the audience to know about the facts. I didn't want my audience to receive the wrong impression of my topic based off of the images alone.

Final Poster Design

I realized that having a poster full of text made it difficult to keep the reader's attention. I shifted to using icons instead. It was the in between point from pure text and illustration. This way, I'm able to highlight my facts without creating distractions. Choosing the colors was difficult as I wanted the poster to stand out. I went with red and gold as the colors were vibrant and it was also a popular wedding color. It worked as my topic went against the norm of what's to be expected out of single people.

Gallery Piece

This was my prototype for the piece I was planning to make for the TPK gallery. The wedding arc would have a list of facts on it and the stand would hold my experimental poster on display.
